Wellington and Bay of Plenty Crowned 2025 Intercentre Champions

Wellington have achieved a remarkable three-peat through winning the 2025 National Intercentre.

This is a rare feat- with the Canterbury being the last Centre to do so in 2004.

Interestingly, Stephen Ditfort was a member of the Canterbury team that notched up their three-peat and now find himself in the same position as a member of the Wellington side.

Wellington defeated a spirited Auckland team in the final with Ray Martin losing his Singles rubber to BlackJack Tony Grantham, but the Wellington Pair of Finbar McGuigan/Robbie Bird and Four of Blake Signal, Ben King, Euan Wong and Stephen Ditfort proving too strong for their Auckland counterparts.

Bay of Plenty have denied Nelson their three-peat through winning a tense final and claiming the 2025 National Intercentre title.

The title came down to an epic battle between Jo Edwards MNZM and Sue Hodges.

Val Smith and Kay Hammond had proven to strong in the pairs rubber, defeating Kay Bunn and Mina Paul 17 shots to 9,.

The fours was a tense tussle, but it was the Bay of Plenty four of Raewyn Willis, Charlene Puaaka Beckett, Angela Stephen and Caitlin Thomson who were able to hold on against the Nelson fours team of Kirsten Edwards, Amy McIlroy Barbara McGregor and Jo-Ann Collis despite a magnificent effort from Kirsten Edwards with her last bowl.

This left the final on a knife edge, and the tension mounted for players and supporters on both sides as Jo Edwards looked set to be charging to the finish line.

Sue Hodges held her nerve though, and held on to defeat Jo 25 shots to 21- when it became clear that the match was Bay of Plenty's there was much jubilation, and it was clear how much the Intercentre victory meant to the team.

Of special note from the 2025 Intercentre was the awarding of two silver stars to Robbie Bird and Sue Hodges respectively.
They both have exceptional domestic records- and to win five Silver Star events and thus qualify for a Silver Star is a remarkable feat.
