Peter Belliss Hall of Fame Induction Acknowledged By Whanganui District Council Mayor

Bowls New Zealand is proud to celebrate the recent induction of Peter Belliss into the World Bowls Hall of Fame, a recognition that cements his place among the sport’s greatest ambassadors. This prestigious honour acknowledges an extraordinary career that has left an enduring legacy both in Aotearoa and on the international stage.

The occasion was marked by a special reception in Whanganui, attended by Peter’s whānau, friends, fellow bowlers, and distinguished guests, including former Blackjacks Keith Slight and Sean Johnson, Bowls New Zealand selector Lance Tasker and Peter’s wife, Reen - herself an accomplished bowler. Bowls New Zealand extends its gratitude to Mayor Andrew Tripe and his office for hosting the event, a fitting tribute to one of Whanganui’s finest sportsmen in a sport that often flies under the radar.

Peter’s induction was part of a historic moment for New Zealand bowls, as he joined four other Kiwi legends - Rowan Brassey, Jo Edwards, Sharon Sims, and Val Smith - in the inaugural Hall of Fame class.

Bowls New Zealand CEO Mark Cameron summed up the significance of the achievement “it’s a tremendous honour to see five of our own recognised on the world stage. Each of these athletes has not only achieved remarkable success on the green but has also inspired generations of bowlers here in New Zealand and beyond. Their induction is a proud moment for our sport and our country.”

World Bowls President Brett O’Riley, a fellow New Zealander and long-time associate of Peter, echoed this sentiment this first induction of our Hall of Fame is a landmark as we embrace the players who have shaped our sport and inspired us, many still actively contributing across a gamut of roles.”

Peter Belliss’s career is nothing short of remarkable, marked by success at every level of the game. Beyond his achievements on the green, Peter has made an immense contribution to the sport through his roles as High-Performance Coach and National Selector, helping shape and guide New Zealand’s top players. His tactical acumen, mentorship, and quiet confidence have earned him respect across the country and internationally, inspiring a new generation of bowlers to strive for excellence.

Known as a true gentleman of the sport, Peter exemplifies humility, integrity, and commitment - qualities that have made him a role model for bowlers everywhere. His influence continues to resonate through Bowls New Zealand’s high performance programme and among emerging players.
