Move over cancer!

Turning Bowls into Something Bigger: Move Over Cancer

Bowls has always been about more than the game. It’s about connection, community, and getting people moving together. This March, clubs across the country can turn those everyday moments on the green into something truly meaningful by supporting Move Over Cancer.

Move Over Cancer is a nationwide campaign supporting New Zealanders recovering from cancer. Not just surviving it but getting their lives back. While cancer treatment saves lives, recovery doesn’t always end when treatment does. Many people are left rebuilding strength, confidence, and routine, often without the support they need.

That’s where the Cancer Rehabilitation Foundation (PINC & STEEL) comes in. As New Zealand’s only charity dedicated solely to cancer rehabilitation, they use exercise and movement to help people recover well, reduce long‑term impacts, and reconnect with everyday life. Quite simply, movement is medicine.

Bowls plays a special role in that journey. Rehabilitation helps people transition safely back into community exercise - including bowls - where gentle movement, social connection, and belonging can make all the difference.

How clubs can help

Getting involved is easy and flexible. Clubs can:

  • Host a Move Over Cancer bowls day or tournament
  • Run a gold‑coin roll‑up
  • Add fundraising to an existing event
  • Collect donations throughout March

Every contribution helps close the gap between cancer treatment and recovery.

Public funding for rehabilitation is limited, and access often depends on affordability. By getting behind Move Over Cancer, bowls clubs are helping ensure recovery is possible for everyone - not just those who can afford it.

This March, let’s use our greens, our clubs, and our community spirit to support those who need it most.
