Umpiring bowls isn’t always a walk in the park—it takes confidence, a sharp eye, and a cool head under pressure. But across Aotearoa, 533 dedicated umpires step up every week to keep our game fair, fun, and running smoothly. From club matches to national finals, these unsung heroes are always there, making sure things tick along just as they should. We couldn’t do it without them.
They’re supporting play at every level—at local clubs, centre events, and the biggest national and international tournaments. Most regions have their own umpiring groups to organise matches and support new umpires, while the Bowls New Zealand Umpires Committee provides leadership and helps keep things consistent right across the country.
Plenty of people start at the club level, learning the ropes and building their confidence. Over time, they step into bigger roles at centre and national events—and for a lucky few, there's even the chance to wear the silver fern and officiate on the world stage at events like the World Championships or the Commonwealth Games. Some of our most experienced umpires also give back by mentoring newcomers and leading major tournaments here at home. They’re a massive part of what makes our bowls community so strong.
Growing Our Umpiring Community
Every year, around 60 to 80 people take the plunge—either sitting exams to become qualified umpires or renewing their certification. We also offer online laws courses so people can learn the ins and outs of the game from home. It’s a great way to get started, and many participants go on to become fully qualified umpires in their regions.
One thing we’re especially proud of is how sharp our umpires look these days. Thanks to Bowls New Zealand sponsor Summerset, almost every active umpire now wears the official uniform with pride. It’s helped create a stronger sense of identity and connection across the umpiring community.
And while they’re often the quiet ones in the background, we make sure they stay well connected. Through our Umpires Hub website, a dedicated Facebook group, and our regular newsletter, umpires can share stories, get updates, and stay in the loop all year round.
As Michael Johnson, Chair of the Bowls New Zealand Umpires Committee, puts it:
"Becoming an umpire is a great way to support the sport you love. Umpires ensure fair play, help events run smoothly, and create a positive experience on the green—all as volunteers. Many continue to play competitively, which is fantastic to see. We've refreshed our approach to umpiring in NZ, and it's encouraging to see strong numbers training each year. Thank you to all umpires and leaders for your dedication—you make a real difference."
