L>R: Jo Toogood, Liz Tomlins, Annie McDonald, Jackie Brook
The 78th edition of the West Coast Women’s Open saw a total of 27 teams from various locales, spanning from the upper reaches of the South Island to the southernmost regions. Making an impressive debut, the team led by Jackie Brook emerged victorious, clinching the title.
Following two days of intense section play, the composite team comprising Jo Toogood (Hawea), Liz Tomlins (Arrowtown), Jackie Brook (Cromwell), and Annie McDonald (Oamaru) advanced to the Top 16 at Dobson Bowling Club. Their journey culminated in a thrilling final showdown against a Blaketown team, helmed by skipper Loretta Leach. Despite both teams exhibiting prowess in earlier matches, it was evident that this final would be a closely contested affair. However, the Jackie Brook-led team secured an early advantage and, despite Blaketown's valiant efforts, proved too formidable, ultimately clinching victory.
Reflecting on their triumph, Jo Toogood of the Hawea Bowling Club expressed immense satisfaction with their experience in Greymouth over the three-day bowls event. Winning on their maiden attempt filled them with excitement, and upon receiving the trophy, they eagerly anticipated returning next year to defend their title.
Shaun Aynsley, Bowls West Coast representative, extended gratitude to the Nelson Building Society, the longstanding main sponsor of the West Coast Women’s Open. Their generous support has been instrumental in ensuring the success of this event year after year.
