Mandy Boyd has won a fifth national fours title, less than three months after giving birth to her second daughter.
The former Blackjack has skipped her composite four, featuring older sister Angela, best mate Kirsten Edwards and Edwards’ mum Leigh Griffin, to a 20-13 win over Margaret O’Connor in the women’s final at the Summerset National Fours in Wellington.
Boyd’s 11-week-old Isla watched on greenside during section-play, but stayed at home with her grandmother for the knock-out rounds at the Naenae Bowling Club.
“It’s been a bit of a mission, but the help I’ve got from everyone has been really good,” Boyd said.
“Angela has made my breakfast every morning and mum is back home with Isla right now…watching on the livestream.
“Being so close with Kirsten and Leigh as well, they’re very understanding when I’m every now and then checking my phone…making sure everything is all good.”
It’s the sixth national title the Boyd sisters have won together, the third featuring Griffin and the second with Edwards.
“All being such good friends and really compatible really helps,” Mandy Boyd said.
“Obviously I play with Angela a lot so we really know each other’s game and how to get the best out of each other, same with Kirsten and Leigh.
“Just how well we know each other really helps us to get across the line, especially in those games that are so close.”
Boyd’s four didn’t have it all its own way.
It edged Lisa White 22-21 in the quarter-finals and then had to come from 15-12 down to beat Debbie White 19-15 in this morning’s semi-final.
“This tournament has actually been really, really difficult. So many games have come down to the last couple of ends, which has been good.”
“The word of the tournament has been patience. Just keep scoring and hope at the end it’ll come together.
“Pleased that it worked out as they’ve played so well for me.”
