The Bowls New Zealand ‘World Class Strategy 2018-2022’ was created in the latter part of 2018 with the support of coaches and players from within the New Zealand bowls community as well as high performance sport specialists from different fields. The plan has been reviewed at regular intervals over the past 16 months as Bowls NZ managed its pathway to the now postponed 2020 World Championship in Australia. With the Covid-19 pandemic affecting not only New Zealand but the World in general, Bowls New Zealand undertook a full and thorough review of the World Class strategy; acknowledging:

  • Postponement of key bowls events
  • Funding cuts from various entities
  • Current/future Bowls NZ Financial position
  • Short time period from World Bowls Champs in 2021 and Commonwealth Games in 2022
  • Uncertainty around the Covid-19 pandemic globally and lasting effects

An update on the World Class Strategy 2018-2022 was proposed and agreed upon for the July 1st 2020 to June 30th 2021 period (taking in the World Champs in May/June 2021) and thereafter another update to be undertaken for the period July 2021-December 2022 (taking in the Commonwealth Games in July/August 2022).

With the proposed ‘revised’ strategy to start in July 2020 and existing athlete, coach and selectors agreements scheduled to run through to December 31st 2020, we made the necessary decision to void these existing agreements as of June 30th, 2020 in order to instigate the new revised plan.

The plan for July 1 2020, will see a high performance structure consisting of the following:

  • High Performance Manager – Kaushik Patel
  • National Head Coach – Peter Belliss
  • High Performance Consultant – John Quinn
  • National Head Selector – To be appointed
  • High Performance Coaches x 4 – To be appointed
  • One High Performance squad consisting of 14-18 athletes – To be selected
