International bowls didn't start in New Zealand until 1906, when the 'All Whites' New Zealand bowling team went on a tour of Australia.

However, like the vast majority of representative teams at the time, the New Zealand team wasn't selected on their bowling ability. Factors such as their ability to to mix and mingle with the clubs and countries they visited were seen as far more important than their ability to place their bowls near the jack.

This is shown by the fact that the New Zealand team that competed in the 1934 Empire Games was chosen through virtue of them holidaying in England at the time.

This attitude towards representative teams changed dramatically in 1938, when it was decided at the AGM to select a team based on bowls merit to send to that years Empire Games.

In addition to this, costs to the players were agreed to be covered by the New Zealand Bowling Association.

New Zealand reaped almost immediate benefits of this policy and made all three finals at the 1938 Empire games, winning two of them.

This began a tradition of occupying the upper echelon of international lawn bowls that continues to this day.
