Blackjacks play spoiler after playoff hopes end

Event News, High Performance

The Blackjacks have bookended day three of #BPL09 with wins, but they’re out of semi-final contention at the Naenae Bowling Club in Lower Hutt.

After dropping its first six matches, the New Zealand trio of Jo Edwards, Seamus Curtin and Shannon McIlroy (skip) needed to win seven of its eight remaining round-robin games to remain in playoff contention.

The hosts made a good start, comfortably accounting for the Perth Suns in straight sets, 8-0, 13-5.

But the Blackjacks then ran into the inform Illawarra Gorillas, who ran away with a 7-1, 11-1 win.

Tie-breaker defeats to the Murray Steamers and Brisbane Pirates followed to end New Zealand’s title hopes.

New Zealand had another tie-breaker match in the night session and this time it went their way, prevailing 4-7, 7-1, 1-0 against the Melbourne Roys, who had won their last five games.

The result has lifted the Blackjacks to seventh in the eight team competition, above the Perth Suns on net set points.

The Illawarra Gorillas sit six points clear at the top of the table after winning four of their five games on day three, highlighted by an 11-3, 5-3 win over the Sydney Lions.

The Melbourne Roys are second despite their defeat in the final game of the day.

The Roys are above the defending champion Brisbane Pirates and Gold Coast Hawks on net set points and three points clear of the fifth-placed Sydney Lions.

The much-fancied Murray Steamers sit sixth and out of playoff contention.

The final three rounds today (February 28) will decide the semi-finalists for the playoffs which will be broadcast LIVE tonight on SKY Sport.

Final day action starts at 11am, with livestreaming on the Bowls NZ Facebook page.
