A Burnside combination of Mike Small and Richard Hocking have won the Stewart Buttar Pairs bowls tournament played on the Burnside green in Christchurch on Sunday (14th January).
The final became one-sided, with Small and Hocking giving an immaculate display of draw bowls. They beat Rodney Greaney and Ian Rule from the Elmwood Park Club 16-4 after 15 ends, with one end left unplayed.
Such was their superiority that Greaney and Rule scored on just four ends. Greaney said that after their last round of post section play, where they had defeated the Australian pairing of Aaron Wilson and Brett Wilkie 12-10, that they had ‘done their dash’ in that round.
The performance of Small and Hocking, who won all their games over the three days of the tournament was a masterly display, with both players executing all the shots required.
The weather, whilst inclement on the first two days, improved markedly thereafter and on finals day turned out brilliantly fine and hot with the greens quickening to 17 seconds as the they dried out.
The Burnside Bowling Club can be congratulated on a well-run tournament, which included the addition of livestreaming to their Facebook site. This looks to be the way of the future and Burnside’s reputation continues to grow with their IT expertise coming to the fore.
