PBA: Return to top form for Glassey and Muir

Event News, News

Hawkes Bay’s Murray Glassey and Central Otago’s Richie Muir were the star performers in the latest weekend of New Zealand Professional Bowls Association action as players strived to qualify for the International Singles in England at seven venues around the country. Glassey and Muir won on both days picking up wins in their Ranking Singles event on the Saturday, and then also their International Singles qualifier on the Sunday.

The return to form of the former number one Glassey was timely having dipped just outside the top five of the latest New Zealand rankings, while Muir will return to NZ PBA Finals Weekend after previously appearing in 2016. Muir did it the hard way in Invercargill taking out both top ranked players in Southland, Craig Merrilees in the semifinal and Craig Tinker in the final 11-5, 10-5.

It looked headed towards a clash between Glassey and a winner in two venues this year David Jones (Bay of Plenty) in Hastings with Glassey beating Dean Drummond for the second time in the weekend in his semifinal and Jones looking all over Aaron Bryant winning the first set 16-1, but Bryant starting chipping in with bowls when he had to and overcame Jones. Bryant then continued that giant-killing form into the final winning the first set on Glassey 8-6, however experience came through with Glassey taking an early lead in the second set, snuffed out a comeback taking out 2 Bryant shots to pick up a 3 and a 9-2 lead, and never looked back winning the second set 12-2 and the tiebreak 2-0.

It was almost a similar perfect weekend for Nick Buttar in Auckland winning the Ranking Singles on the Saturday and reaching the final of the International Singles Qualifier on the Sunday but he came unstuck going down convincingly to Steve Cox 11-2, 9-1. This will be Cox’s 4th visit to Finals Weekend.

23-year old Jesse Russell continues to make an impact and will be at Finals Weekend for the second time in his 2-year PBA career taking out Mark Pene in the final in Hamilton 8-3, 9-5. Russell came through a great quarterfinal match against Alan Bowler decided on an umpire’s caliper measure and was too consistently close to the jack for Pene.

Bruce Mummery had a break-through win in New Plymouth beating Wanganui’s Phil Corney in the final 8-7, 8-3. Mummery reached a qualifier final last year but will be at Finals Weekend for a first time. Corney was also looking for a first qualifier win after winning a ranking event last year but had to suffice for runner-up in his first qualifier final.

Long-time campaigner Rob Ashton beat the odds in Wellington taking out form horse Ray Martin in the semifinals, and then snatched an unlikely win over leading Rookie Euan Wong in the final. The first set had been drawn 5-5, Wong was leading the second set 8-5 and elected to driving the jack into the ditch with his first bowl, then threw a loose end allowing Ashton a four to take the set and the win 9-8.

The International Singles qualifier in Dunedin reached the semifinals and will be concluded next Sunday along with the World Indoor Singles and Pairs qualifiers.
