It was an all family affair at the 2020 West Coast Men’s Open Fours, as the fathers and sons’ composite of Shaun and John Aynsley and Shaun and Rob Osborne ran out victors in a memorable weekend for the quartet.

The three-day event, a popular attraction on the Summer of Bowls programme, sees teams from all over the South Island travel to Greymouth to compete, with 32 teams in attendance for 2020 – and is typically held several days prior to the women’s fours equivalent.

As per the tournament format, the first two days sees teams qualifying for the top 16, comprising the top five performed teams from each of the three sections, plus the next best qualifier rounding out the post-section field.

Held at the Cobden green in perfect weather, the final saw Aynsley’s side consign Ethan Kelleher and team to yet another runner-up podium finish, Kelleher and Co seemingly unable to get over the line in their last three consecutive finals.

Qualifiers for the main event included (skips name only), J Tobin, T Skerton, A Robins, J Forsyth, P Spooner, R Fensom, J Dunn, E MacDonald, D Vincent, J Lynch, C Bullock, K Smythe, J Lee, D Isherwood, S Aynsley and E Kelleher.

Meanwhile, Blaketown locals John Lynch, Jordan Campbell, Craig Negri and Mike Dunn took out the plate, with Adrian Robins, Stephen Ford, Mark Young and Gary Allen taking second.

In other results, Hornby’s Allan Wright and team won the Consolation 1 tier, while Clyde’s Jeff Hurst and Co topped Consolation 2.

Reflecting on the event, tournament convenor Owen Matheson said there had been dozens of positive comments and feedback received following the event’s conclusion.

“The weather has played its part and it’s been a great success,” Matheson said.

“The greenkeeper at Cobden did an amazing job getting the green up to 17 seconds, so the surface was playing very well and it was great to see a lot of fun and banter out there.”

Matheson thanked all the volunteers for their efforts in the kitchen, behind the bar and in and outside of the clubhouse, as well as tournament sponsors, the Recreation Hotel.

The West Coast Men’s Open Fours will return in February, 2021.

The West Coast Women’s Open Fours will also conclude later this week.
