108 teams have entered this year’s Clubs New Zealand Men's National Fours Bowls Tournament to be held next week in Christchurch from Monday 4th to Friday 9th February 2018. Six Christchurch Bowling Clubs will be used to host the 108 teams: Papanui Club, Morrison Avenue, Fendalton, Belfast, Bowls Papanui and Burnside.
Over half the entries are North Island teams including leading bowlers Les Dempster-Rivett (Hamilton WMC), Shane Drabble (Manurewa Cosmopolitan), and Lance Tasker (Tauranga Citizens) who was in the winning team last year. South Island teams include notable Skips Glen McDonald (Papanui Club), John Mears (Woolston), Greg Smith (Oamaru) and Kerry Becks (Kaiapoi Workingmens Club) making up a strong field for the event. The host Club Papanui Club has entered an impressive 17 teams.
Play commences on the Monday with 8 rounds of section play, with teams needing to win 6 games to qualify for Post Section, with one round of Post Section being played on the Wednesday. Three rounds of 21 ends per day of section play will be played with a time limit of 2½ hours. Bowls commences daily at 8.45am with the finals being played on the Friday at the Papanui Club green with no time limit.
Qualifiers for Post Section play will play off for the overall championship (Moase Cup), Runners Up (Jack Travis Cup) and Post Section Consolation (Jim Dempsey Trophy). A Consolation event will also be held for non-qualifiers on the Thursday.
