David spends a lot of time with guide dog, Jackson, a black Labrador retriever, and enjoys indulging in his passion for his garden. David is assisted both on and off the green by his director of five years, Peter Blick.
At what age did you start playing Bowls: 44
Why did you take an interest in Bowls? Played indoor bowls. Father in law took me to “Cobbers days”at his club. After he died I inherited his bowls and took it up after talking to John Flett who had established the NZ Blind Lawn Bowling Association
Most memorable match? Beating Israel in South Africa to win a Silver medal at The World Blind Champs.
Greatest influence in Bowls: John Flett encouraged me to take up bowls and showed me what it could do for blind and visually impaired people.
Toughest opponent? Always South Africa at World Champs!
Aspiration in Bowls? To play the very best I can which will hopefully lead to a Commonwealth Games Medal.
Advice for new players? Bowls is a great sport for those with a disability and I would encourage anyone to play it. Bowls has been an amazing journey for me and I have met some fantastic people out of it.
