This year the South Island Greenkeepers Conference was held in Balclutha, hosted by the South Otago Greenkeepers Assn. This conference was hugely successful for lots of reasons:

  • 70 Greenkeepers or assistants registered to attend
  • Extremely good attendance from Christchurch south
  • Sponsorship received from 6 suppliers of products or service to Bowls Greenkeeping
  • Speakers of high quality
  • Agronomists
  • Fantastic facility for holding the conference

The conference program consisted of topics that are relevant and timely for the all greenkeepers. There was fantastic interaction between the speakers and the attendees in terms of the questions asked, feedback given and opportunities to learn from each other.

Conference Topics included:

  • Issues and Opportunities during playing season
  • Managing Water
  • Spraying and Spray Calibration
  • Health and Safety
  • Mowing
  • Fertilisers when and why
  • Green Renovation
  • Pests Porina and Others
  • Open Forum with Agronomists

Lots of opportunity for the sponsors to promote their products and services at break times.

I want to thank them sincerely for being part of the conference and assisting in making it a complete success. These conferences have grown over the years and by the numbers attending it shows that because of the large geographical area of the South Island that conference held in the lower half and then northern half of the island are well patronised.

At the conference dinner presentations for long service awards (20years) were made to Bruce Gold, Allan Teraki & Tom Dallas all from South Otago Bowling Clubs.

Bowls NZ Greenkeepers Assn presented Bruce Lowe National Sales Manager from Prebble Seeds a merit award for his amazing support to the bowls greenkeeping industry.

An award presented by Bowls NZ Greenkeeping Assn and sponsored by Prebble Seeds was also made to Maurice Symes for “œServices to Greenkeeping”. This award is made for the huge contribution Maurice has made to the greenkeeping industry including doing greens, assisting clubs to renovate, planning and rebuilding/resowing greens, management committees for National Turf conferences, promotion of training within greenkeeping and his long association he has had doing the administration work for Bowls NZ Greenkeeping Assn.

Congratulations Maurice well deserved

Next conference will be held in Nelson in July 2018. Keep a look out for information in the new year.
