In the 8th edition of this prestigious tournament held over Easter weekend, there was a great field with teams travelling from all over the country. After a rainy opening round, the sun quickly made its way out and thankfully stayed around for the rest of the tournament to present glorious playing conditions.
After three days play, the Main Event Final came down to the experienced team of Mike Galloway, David Clark and Gavin Brown up against rising stars Ashleigh Jeffcoat, Richard Hocking and Kimberley Hemingway. It was Mike Galloway’s team who applied the early pressure and built a bit of breathing space halfway through the match. However, Ashleigh Jeffcoat’s team were not to be rattled and going into the last end, were down 11-10. In the final end, Ashleigh’s team played some beautiful bowls to clinch the final 12-10 and take out the 2018 and 8th edition of the Barfoot & Thompson $20,000 Royal Oak Bowls Invitational Triples Tournament. It was a fantastic effort by these young bowlers who showed all tournament their growing talent by knocking over many top teams.
It was great to see the local Royal Oak team of Danny Delany, Joe Whitelaw and John Carruthers take out the plate final against the Point Chevalier team of Aidan Takarua, Taylor Horn and Nick Thompson.
As always, a big thank you to the players, tournament sponsors and the many club volunteers who helped put the tournament together over Easter Weekend.
