Dunn and Pascoe Family to the Fore in West Coast Win

News

It was an all family affair at the largely celebrated West Coast Men’s Open Fours, as Canterbury representative Jason Dunn combined with son Logan and two lauded West Coast siblings Trevor and Merv Pascoe to take out the spoils, defeating the Kelleher family of Ethan, Danny, Hamish and Nigeal in a memorable final.

Now in its 105th edition, teams travelled from far and wide to take part over the three day event, with sides registering from Auckland through to the lower depths of the South Island – as organisers enjoyed a bumper year, endorsed by the nationwide Summer of Bowls programme.

As the heat continued to bear down on play over the first two days, 32 teams took to the multiple greens on show to play six qualifying games in a bid to be named among the top 16 to contest the finals play and vye for their share of the sizeable $5000 prize pool up for grabs. Greens used included Dobson, Cobden, Karoro and Hokitika.

The business end of the competition saw Finals Play progress at the Cobden club, with the top 16 going head to head in a straight knockout format.

Dunn and his side were in irrepressible form throughout the tournament, proving too strong for the homegrown local Kelleher quartet, who despite competing on their home green in front of a supportive rinkside crowd, seemingly had little answer to the strength of Dunn’s line-up.

Meanwhile, for those teams not to be among the top 16, a Plate event was held with Alan Wright’s team from Hornby taking the silverware, defeating the recently relocated G.Hoskins, who has made the shift from Central Otago to Hokitika.

In other results, J. Hurst’s Clyde-based team took out the first spot in the Consolation One contest, while the Greymouth/Karoro side skipped by J.Lees, finished top in the Consolation Two competition.

With the competition concluded for the men, the Women’s Open Fours will now commence on February 12, with 46 quartets taking to the greens in a bid to be crowned the Coast champions and secure their share of the incentivising $6000 prize pool among the mix.
