Blackjacks McIlroy and Edwards Going for Gold

News

Kiwi internationals Shannon McIlroy and Jo Edwards have moved within one win of a World Champion of Champion Singles accolade, comfortably controlling their respective semi-finals at St Johns Park, Sydney on day six.

Heading in to the penultimate day of action, both McIlroy and Edwards were eagerly awaiting their opponents, with the Elimination Finals held early Saturday in the midst of a bumper crowd and viewership on the Facebook live stream.

In the men’s action, Malaysia’s Ejoy Redzuan edged a thriller opposite Isle of Man representative Clive McGreal to book his spot opposite the unbeaten McIlroy, while Hong Kong China’s Tony Cheung advanced through to line-up against Australia’s Lee Schraner following a straight-sets victory opposite Scotland’s Martyn Rice in an entertaining fixture.

The women’s field saw Singapore’s Tammy Thian put paid to the title run of USA representative Anne Nunes, edging a thrilling tie-breaker 3-1, while Scotland’s Dee Hoggan comfortably progressed to the semi-final, defeating Namibian Marietji van den Bergh, 8-6, 11-5.

Awaiting the finalists, Edwards was in commanding touch as she dispatched Thian with little trouble, while Malaysian star Alyani Jamil proved too strong for Hoggan, dashing her title hopes in straight sets and setting up a mouth-watering prospect opposite Edwards on Sunday.

Across rinks, McIlroy left no doubt on the scoring, continuing his unbeaten record and irresistible form to advance to Sunday’s final showdown as he looks to wrap up an unscathed tournament, with Cheung the only competitor left standing in his way.

Meanwhile, the other semi-final saw emerging Jackaroo squad member Schraner faced with a seemingly tough assignment in Cheung, eventually unable to keep touch with the Hong Kong China starter on the final end of the tie-breaker, succumbing 3-2 in a scintillating encounter.

Both finals will be live streamed on the St Johns Park Bowls’ Facebook page, with the Women’s Final scheduled to get underway for 1pm NZT and the Men’s Final to follow at 4pm NZT.
