The Blackjacks finished with three wins from four games on a quiet sixth day at the 21st Commonwealth Games on Australia’s Gold Coast.
Singles player Shannon McIlroy had a win and loss – but is still in a strong position to qualify – while the women’s pair and women’s triple both posted strong wins.
McIlroy opened with a 21-10 win over Cephas Kimwaki Kimani (Kenya), after shooting out to an 11-1 lead. Kimani brought it back to 11-9, before McIlroy dominated the closing ends.
But dropping a three and a four on consecutive ends mid-game ultimately cost the 2016 World singles champion his fourth round match, England’s Robert Paxton taking the encounter 21-18. McIlroy had led 14-9 before Paxton took the seven shots to change the dynamics of the match.
Both Paxton and McIlroy have three wins each, the Englishman coming unstuck to Jamaica’s Andrew Newell on Tuesday morning. McIlroy, of course, had beaten Newell 21-0 on Monday. McIlroy’s final pool game on Wednesday is against India’s Krishna Xalxo, who has two wins but trails the Kiwi by 21 differential points.
Val Smith and Jo Edwards romped home 29-6 over the Tongan pair of Caroline Dubois, who plays her bowls in the North Harbour centre, and Malia Kioa. They had led 15-0 after six ends. Smith and Edwards have two from two ahead of two potentially ticklish matches on Wednesday.
The women’s triple of Tayla Bruce, Katelyn Inch and Mandy Boyd defeated Jersey 24-8 on Tuesday evening. There was nothing in the match after 10 of the 18 ends, the Blackjacks leading 8-7. But they took the next four ends to open up a game-winning 17-7 break. Boyd’s side meets Wales in the last section play match on Wednesday at 6.01pm (NZT) and is already assured of a place in the quarterfinals which will follow soon after at 9pm (NZT).
After a rest, the B6/B7/B8 triple of Bruce Wakefield, Barry Wynks and Mark Noble meet England in the semifinals at 6.01pm on Wednesday.
The men’s fours of Michael Nagy, Blake Signal, Paul Girdler and Ali Forsyth also had a rest day on Tuesday and return for two rounds on Wednesday evening.
